At the age of ten DeDe Hunt stumbled across the poetry of Nikki Giovanni. As a child she was intrigued with how boldly Nikki Giovanni expressed herself through words. At age twelve DeDe was introduced to the work of Ntozake Shange. After reading For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide, Dede realized she could take a poem and make it her own.
DeDe was later introduced to the work of Maya Angelou. When she read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, she felt as if she wasn't alone anymore. There was another little girl who knew the shame and pain of hiding a secret that was slowly killing you. From elementary school into adulthood DeDe wrote poetry.
In 2001, after visiting a spoken word café she began performing her poetry as spoken word. After receiving spiritual confirmation to pursue her writing and leave her day job as a hairstylist, she was graced with the stage name Quietstorm. Through prayer she peeled back layers of herself in order to find the conviction, determination, and confidence to share her artistry and gifts with the world.
Quietstorm's work examines the joys and pains of being a black woman. Her work is raw and bold without an apology. But there is a vulnerability in it that can't be denied.
Her controversial video Who is Sara Baartman? Received over 3,000 views it's first week on Youtube. Quietstorm has received several requests for speaking engagements and is currently working on her first audio book of poetry.
